What's the buzz around Siberian ginseng?

Building on the trend for rummaging, foraging and all things natural, have you heard of Siberian ginseng?

And no, it’s not one of Aldi’s fancy new flavoured gins.

Although, I do love gin…

Siberian ginseng is a bush which is able to resist even the most extreme Siberian winters. It's famous for its adaptogenic and medicinal abilities, thanks to the variety and complexity of its chemicals.

Having a beneficial effect on metabolism of proteins, fats and carbohydrates, ginseng extract improves skin condition and helps restore epidermis cells. It regulates water amount, protects skin from dehydration and acts as a kind of a stimulator fortifying blood circulation.

Thanks to all of its amazing properties, ginseng extract can be effective in treating fading, ageing and sensitive skin!

And it’s wild-harvested in Siberia.

Wild-harvesting, also called wild-crafting, is all about collecting flowers, plants and herbs from their natural environment in a sensitively managed and fully sustainable way.

These unique herbs have undergone natural selection – only the most resilient, strong plants that are rich in nutrients and active components survive.

But did you know that wild-harvesting has to be managed carefully to ensure the plants’ sustainability?

One of the key considerations is the season. The time of gathering has to be aligned with the time of maximum accumulation of valuable nutritive and biologically active substances in the plant.

It’s important to not over-harvest. Leaves can be collected every year, but roots can only be taken every two to three years. And some plants need to be left for five years in between harvesting.

It’s also vital that gathered plant stock should be used as soon as possible by drying or other processing methods. Grass, for example, which has stayed in a basket for more than three or four hours, self-heats. This destroys vitamins and its unique properties.

Here at Natura Siberica, we started our own wild-harvesting farm in 2013 – the first and largest organic farm in Russia. The farm spans 33 hectares and is located in a unique region called Khakassia where many of the rare Siberian herbs naturally grow. Working closely with local farmers, 16 hectares of this land has been cultivated and planted with 14 species of rare Siberian herbs.
